Bled to Host World Bank Conference on Development Economics

16 May 2007

Bled, 16 May (STA) - The Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics, one of the most important international events on development matters, will
be held in Bled, Slovenia, on Thursday and Friday. The event will focus on private sector and development and is organised by the Slovenian Finance
Ministry and the World Bank.

Keynote addresses will be delivered by Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, Finance Minister Andrej Bajuk and Francois Bourguignon, chief economist and senior vice-president of the World Bank.

World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz, who is embroiled in a scandal involving a generous pay package for his girlfriend and faces a vote of no confidence from the bank's board, was expected to attend as well, but he will not be coming.

The most prominent speakers include Tarun Das, chief adviser to the Confederation of Indian Industry, European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik and Trevor Manual, the South African finance minister and the chairman of the G-20 group.

The aim of the conference is to bring together academics, politicians, private sector stakeholders and representatives of the civil society for discussions on the role of the private sector in development.

The three plenary sessions to be held over two days will look into the extent to which financial sector reforms can help alleviate poverty, the factors affecting business climate and the provision of public services by non-state providers.

The plenaries will be accompanied by a series of workshops and panels, as well as fringe events such as the annual meeting of the international network of researchers and a meeting of parliamentarians from Southeast Europe.

ABCDE conferences have been held annually since 1988. Since 2003 two conferences are being held each year, one focusing on global issues (the Bled event) and one that is more regional (which will be held in Beijing this year).
